About Roland Martin
Painting from a place of high esteem and adoration for his eccentric friends, Roland Martin’s intimate portraits function as vignettes, each work offering a decadent glimpse into a night of hedonistic shenanigans. Usually starting from an inside joke or a comical moment, his paintings are expressive and irreverent; with every piece inspired by his lovably ridiculous family of companions.
Curators' Note
We are delighted to share Roland Martin's work with you. After completing his studies at UC Berkeley in California, Roland travelled to New Zealand for an extended stay. During his time here, we had the pleasure of spending time with him and gaining insight into both his practice and the relationships that inspire it.
Drawing inspiration from the people closest to him, Roland's paintings celebrate friendship, individuality, and the joy of belonging with warmth, humour, and unmistakable vitality. Rich in colour and character, each work invites viewers into moments of connection, celebration, and playful irreverence. It is a pleasure to introduce Roland's work through Curators Chamber, and we look forward to following the continued evolution of his practice.
